Colon is the Castilian derivation (the Catalan, Colom) of the Italian name Colombo, which was a name originally given to a family who kept doves. It has also been applied to the bird itself and, according to one record, to God's Holy Spirit, which is described in the the Bible gospels as appearing in the form of a dove at Jesus' baptism.
