Yes, there are other ways of finding relatives and following the paper trail where ever possible is the preferred method. The purpose of the project is, however, finding out whether male individuals with the paternal surname LEAL who have done Y-DNA tests are genetically related to one another following the paternal line. Y-DNA testing is thus instrumental for the project. One can also research maternal lines and use MtDNA genealogy for this, but that is not the purpose of the project at hand.

I am aware that according to Jewish religious laws, the religion is in principle passed on from mother to children so that MtDNA genealogy is the preferred method for establishing whether or not a person is Jewish in this sense. I am not Jewish in this sense, however. I simply seem to have paternal ancestors who might very well have been Sephardim.

Regards,

Oscar
