Moses “Colyer” and Simon B. “Collyer” – 1880 New Jersey Census
I would like to correspond with anyone having knowledge of the family of Moses “Colyer,” who in the 1880 census was a farmer in Wayne, Passaic County, NJ. Per the census, he was b. ca. 1831 in NJ, and his parents had also been born in that state. No wife is listed with the family. Children were Mary, aged 23 (b. ca. 1857); John, 17; Annie, 14; Rosa, 11, Frederick, 9; Asa, 7. There also was a Walter Colyer, laborer, in Wayne in 1880, aged 25 (b. ca. 1855). Was he the son of Moses?
I am also interested in the family of Simon B. “Collyer,” who in 1880 was a carpenter in Bedminster, Somerset County, NJ. He was aged 53 (b. ca. 1827), he and both parents born in NJ. Wife was named Sarah, aged 49, born in NJ, and children were Susan H., aged 19, and Emma R., aged 13.
My primary interest in both of these families is in determining whether they were descendants of Moses Collier, who came from Hingham or Boston, Mass. to Woodbridge, Middlesex County NJ ca. 1683-84. Some descendants seem to have remained in Middlesex County for an unknown period. Others, adopting the spelling “Collyer” or “Colyer,” went to the area of Basking Ridge, Somerset County, Morris County, and Newark, Essex County. Some were in Bedminster from ca. 1800 on.
I would appreciate input from anyone who has knowledge of the ancestry of Moses or Simon, or other “Colliers” in New Jersey who were descended from Moses Collier (ca. 1625, England – March 17, 1684-85, Woodbridge).
