As we say, this is not my Collins line, but here's what I find on a quick lookup through the census records Catherine B. Collins' father would seem to be a William KOLLING (also COLLING or COLLINS) who immigrated to the U. S. from Germany in about 1881 or 1882. Her mother would seem to be Emma Anna TRAUTWEIN, born in Kentucky. Starting with George Campbell, we find him in 1900 census with his parents W. F. and Ellen Campbell at 1305 Front St., Oil City, Venango County, Penn. In the 1910 Census, George is still with his parents, but they now reside at 621 Ruth Avenue, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, Calif. ================== By 1920 George Campbell and Catherine Collins have married and are listed in the census as follows: 1920 Census: California, Los Angeles County, Los Angeles Assembly District 72 Enumeration District 370 Dwelling 25 5231 South St. Andrews Rd. Campbell, George R. (age 31, Penn Penn Penn) --Catherine B. (age 31, Missouri Germany Kentucky) --Ellen Lee (age 8, Calif Penn Missouri) --George R. (age 1month, Calif Penn Missouri) George is a "buyer bookkeeper" for a retail dry goods store. ======================== Catherine was born in Missouri, her father was born in Germany, and her mother was born in Kentucky. Also in the City of Los Angeles we find this household: 1920 Census: California, Los Angeles County, Los Angeles Assembly District 74 (Enumeration District 431) Dwelling 238 1625 Santee St. Colling, William (age 60, Germany Germany Germany) --Emma (age 54, Kentucky Germany Germany) --Matilda (age 29, Missouri, Germany Germany) --Owena (age 22, Illinois Germany Germany) Pirron, Joseph (boarder) (age 23, Calif Italy Italy) --Ruth (boarder) (age 28, Penn Penn Penn) William immigrated to the United States in 1882, naturalized in 1894. He works in a creamery. =================== Returning to the 1910 census we find Catherine in this same family household: 1910 Census: California, Los Angeles County, Los Angeles Census Enumeration District 175 Dwelling 49 (224 West 11th Street) Colling, William J. (age 50, Germany Germany Germany) --Emma A. (age 44, Kentucky, Germany Germany) --Katie B. (age 21, Missouri Germany Kentucky) --Matilda M. (age 19 ditto) --Agnes O. (age 17, ditto) --Johanna E. (age 12, Illinois Germany Kentucky) --Joseph J. (age 8, ditto) William J. and Emma A. have been married for 23 years. Emma has born 6 children, 5 of whom are still living. William is workman in a creamery. Katie B. and Matilda M. are operators in a telephone office and Agnes is a sales lady in a retail dry goods. William J. Colling immigrated to the U. S. in 1885. He is a naturalized citizen. Also, all members of the household speak English and German. ===================== Tracking back to the 1900 census, we find William Colling's household in Illinois. 1900 Census: Illinois, St. Clair County, East St. Louis Ward 6 (Enumeration District 104) Dwelling 197 1410 Ohio Avenue Kolling, William (Oct 1859, age 40, Germany Germany Germany) --Emma (Aug 1864, age 35, Kentucky Kentucky Kentucky) --Kater (June 1888, age 11, Missouri Germany Kentucky) --Tillie (July 1890, age 9, Missouri Germany Kentucky) --Agnes (Aug 1893, age 6, Missouri Germany Kentucky) --Johana (July 1897, age 2, Illinois Germany, Kentucky) William and Emma have been married for 13 years. Emma has born 5 children, 4 of whom are still living. William immigrated to the U. S. in 1882 and is a naturalized citizen. His occupation is "paper carrier." ============== In the 1870 Census of Kenton County, Kentucky, I find Emma as the daughter of Charles and Pauline Trautwein near Covington, Ky. Both parents were born in Germany: Charles in Wurttemberg and Pauline in Prussia. Charles turns up again in the 1900 census in Los Angeles, a widower, living with his daughter Wilhemina and her husband Owen G. Cates. We know that Emma's maiden name was Trautwein because it is listed in the California Death Index. (Can not find a listing for William Colling.) ================= A search of Ellis Island passengers shows a Wilhelm Kolling arriving in July 1880, another (or same?) Wilhelm Kolling arriving in Sept. 1881. There was a William Kolling who gained citizenship in St. Louis City (Missouri) Oct. 17, 1892. Do not know if those papers would provide more information. (Before 1906, apparently only basic information was recorded.) ================= Hope this is of help. Roger Collins Notify Administrator about this message?
