A biography/family history of John B. Collins, Miles City, MT, is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 1089 & 1090. He is descendent of John Collins, a settler in Massachusetts during the 17th century. John B. Collins was born to Morris & Martha Wicks (Blatchford) Collins, 7 Sep 1853, Quincy, IL, although his parents were living in St. Louis, MO, at that time. Martha W. Blatchford was the daughter of Rev. Dr. John Blatchford, a prominent Presbyterian minister who was the first ordained minister of that church in Chicago. Just before the civil war, Martha and children moved from St. Louis to Hartford, CT, where John B. attended private boarding school. He later was a student at City University, St. Louis, MO, and Jacksonville (IL) high school, Riverview Military Academy, Poughkeepsie, NY; Illinois college, Jacksonville, IL. In 1883, John and his brother, Amos Morris Collins, came to Montana to enter the cattle business. They failed to make the arrangements and Amos returned home and John stayed at Miles City, MT, where he was assistant postmaster for 2 or 3 years, manager of a mercantile house for 3 years, worked in the real estate and insurance business. In 1892, he became the private secretary to the commissioner of the General Land Office at Washington. He returned to Miles City and formed a partnership, Towers & Company, in the livestock, real estate, and insurance business. In 1898, John became the superintendent of Federal Forest Reserve at Missoula, MT, until 1901 when he resigned and re-entered the livestock commission business in Helena. In 1903, to benefit his wife's health, they moved to Forsyth where he continued in the real estate and insurance business until 1905 when he returned to Miles City. John B. was active in politics. At St. Louis, MO, 14 Dec 1874, John married Miss Nellie Davis, daughter of Christopher and Jane (Spottswood) Davis. They had two sons: Morris (died in young manhood); Charles Blatchford (St. Louis, MO). The second wife of John B. Collins was Miss Nellie Thompson, daughter of T.J. and Sarah Thompson, of Ohio. She came to Montana in 1882 and died in Forsyth, MT, 18 Jun 1903. I am not related. Notify Administrator about this message?
