There is at least an family anecdotal history in Mitchell County that four brothers Bryant, Alfred, James and Lewis (supposed to be sons of Andrew Collins and Phereba Ballenger) came from North Carolina into Georgia in the 1820's. I have seen no documentation or proof. The four would be Bryant (b. 1794), Alfred (b. ca. 1800), Lewis, and your James. They used a lot of the same names (Bryant, Alfred, Lewis, James, Andrew) for their children even though they were living in different counties in Georgia. Bryant came into Wilkinson County and lived in Twiggs, Coweta and Stewart counties before settling in Mitchell County. Alfred appears Pulaski County about 1830 through 1860 before settling in Mitchell County by 1870. The Lewis involved, I believe, is the Lewis Collins (b. ca. 1810, NC) who lived in Sumter County. I do not have much more information on these four Collinses other than that. However, I am involved in the Collins Surname DNA Project which could help support or disprove the question of whether these four families are related. Just recently I have found a descendant of Alfred Collins (b. ca. 1800, NC) who has volunteered to participate in the project. If you know of a direct male Collins descendant of James Collins who would volunteer to participate, it would at least confirm whether or not these two families are related. The test simply requires rubbing a cotton swab between your cheek and gum. The participant must be a male and must be a direct Collins descendant (still bearing the Collins name). If you know someone who would be willing to volunteer, just contact me at my e-mail address: rcoll@bellsouth.net Take care, hope to hear from you.
