Hello, If like me, you share a passion for genealogy and a common interest in the surname ‘Collingwood’, I would like to invite you to join me on a major research project that I have just started. Having just retired early, I am taking my hobby to the next level and have embarked on a one-name study. I have registered the name ‘Collingwood’ with The Guild of One-Name Studies. Their site can be found at www.one-name.org It is my aspiration to research the surname ‘Collingwood’ on a world-wide basis, commencing with the UK where I am certain the name originated in a small area of Northumberland known as Coquetdale, close to the English/Scottish border. Those of you who have already researched the surname origins will no doubt be aware of the area I refer to and its association with the infamous ‘Border Reivers’. What I am seeking is corroboration with Collingwood researchers world-wide in an attempt to identify the numerous branches of what hopefully proves to be one global family tree with its roots in the Northumberland area. As I write, I am conscious that today, there is probably in excess of 6,344 people world-wide who share the surname ‘Collingwood’ in countries such as New Zealand, Australia, Canada, USA, Ireland, Argentina, Spain, France, Belgium as well as the UK, where over 3,090 people live today who share the name. I don’t for one minute underestimate the enormity of my task and I expect it to take years to get anywhere near completion. I will however share all of my research as the project unfolds via The Guild of One-Name Studies website so that it is freely available to anyone who shares an interest in the name ‘Collingwood’. All I ask in return is for your input, no matter how great or small, with family trees and interesting stories about famous and infamous Collingwood’s throughout the ages. You are all probably familiar with Lord Cuthbert Collingwood and his part in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, but did you know that one of our ancestors was tried for treason and hung, drawn and quartered in Liverpool on 24th February 1717 for his part in the Jacobite Rebellion? I can be contacted direct at collingwood@one-name.org and I promise to acknowledge all contributions and attribute their source accordingly. Kind Regards Gordon Collingwood Notify Administrator about this message?
