Hi Jools, what a story! I have NZ kin too, not nearly as exciting as yours however. I also have a family with a middle name that gets handed down though I have never discovered the reason for this and even discounted the family rumour about it, THAT has been a merry chase too. The family is STERRY who married into the COLLINGS family in Ipswich in the shape of my grandparents - HARRY COLLINGS & GRACE LILIAN STERRY, the male Sterry's often have COOK as a middle name, and I still have no idea why, they turned out not even to be STERRY but STARRY and there the trail went cold : /
I sometimes think the ancestors did it all quite deliberately just to frustrate me !
I hate laying on the beach too, would far rather delve into history - the thrill of the chase!
I have taken up the challenge of finding my husband's JENSEN ancestors, IN America, FROM Norway & Denmark - JENSEN IN DENMARK - thats Jones in Wales or Smith in England - crazy or what !
I feel a very large gin & tonic coming on ....

Will keep an eye out for your RIVERS COLLINGS in my travels.
LIN
