Adine,

I do have ancestry on the Baxter line back to 1630 Boston, primarily through correspondence with other researchers. The name of Mary Milne also comes from them, and information on her ancestry is not proven, to my knowledge, but my guess is that her father was Andreew Milne, a Scotsman, and mother Mary Hoan (? spelling). I copy in below some snippets I have just collected on this famiuly. There may be more that a diligent search would come up with. (Boston records are pretty spotty until about 1850)

Let me know if you want the Baxter ancestry. I can copy to you that section from my second volume.

Looking for any information on the family of Andrew Milne who was born in Scotland bef. 1766. At some point he emigrated to Boston and married a girl named Mary Hoan (or Hohn) in Sept 1795. By 1800 he had become a shopkeeper on Fish Street in the North End of Boston. He died sometime between the 1810 and 1820 censuses. His widow Mary Milne subsequently moved to Lynn Street, also in Boston.

Probable children included Ann F. Milne who died at the age of 17 in August 1820; George P. Milne who eventually moved to Brooklyn, NY; and Mary Milne who married one of my Baxter ancestors. There appears to have been another male child who was alive as of the 1810 census.

Looking for any information on this family and/or the dates of death of Andrew Milne after 1810 or of his widow Mary Milne after 1850. Mass Vital Records has no entries for them.

Rev. Thomas Baldwin, pastor of the 2d Baptist Church, Boston, married Mr. John W. Baxter and Miss Mary Milne Dec 10 1820. (Register 126:143, April 1972)

There is a Boston marriage record for Andrew Milne and Mary Hoan married on 17 September 1795 by Rev. Wm. Walter. Rev. Walter was Rector of Boston's Old North Church from 1792 to 1800.The Census indices I use for 1800 are messed up for searches of Boston. I could not find a Milne household, but a test for "Smith" came up empty too. Andrew Milne is listed in an 1800 directory as a shopkeeper on Ann Street. In 1805 his shop is on Fish Street. Ann and Fish Streets were both in the Boston's North End and are now part of North Street. The 1810 Census recorded one Milne household in Boston living on Fish Street, Ward 2. (Only heads of household were listed until 1850.) Andrew Milne is living with his wife, two sons under 10, a daughter under 10, and a daugher 10 to 16.No Milne household is listed in 1820.The 1830 Census lists only one Milne household. Mary Milne, age 50 to 60, living alone in Ward 1.The only Milne household listed in Boston in 1840 was headed by a George Milne living in Ward 1.In 1850 Mary Milne, age 72, born in Massachusetts, was living alone in Ward 1.
