I have just received a copy of a genealogy which was originally written long ago by George Poffinberger, grandson of Aquilla Smith (father: Elijah Smith, mother: Margaret Preston). Aquilla was married to Elizabeth Collier. George and his grandfather lived in Winterset, Madison Co, IA. The genealogy mentions "Mycager" (Micajah, Cager...)and Gilson (Jhilson, Jilson...) as siblings of Elizabeth, Nancy/Hannah, Ellender/Nellie, Champeon (Champaign, Champion, Champ...), Adelpha/Philadelphia. The narrative shows one sister marrying a Wm Clark (Nellie maybe?). They are the children of Stephen M. Collier and Hannah/Nancy Elkins. The mother's name of Elkins is mentioned. This should help clarify the maternal line.
I am descended from Aquilla and, presumably, his first wife with the surname "Buckner". I am also descended from Nancy Collier, whose husband was Daniel Cummins (also mentioned in this genealogy). Elizabeth Ann Cummins, daughter of Nancy and Daniel, married Aquilla's grandson John Smith! I'm working both lines.
The Buckner name was mentioned as the first spouse of Aquilla. They would've been married in KY (Pulaski or Rockcastle?). She may have ended up in IN with Aquilla or could have died in KY after birth of son Johnson Smith (b. 1809 in KY). I would love to learn the identity of this Buckner. There is a "Buckner Daniel" (Revolutionary Soldier) of Washington Co, IN and buried in Jackson Co, IN. This may be a clue.
Apparently, Aquilla had cousins named Barnes and a cousin named Smith Daniel(s). Connected with Adelpha Collier and Malichi (Malachi, Malakiah...) Adkins (who ended up in Carlisle, IA) was the name "Harcus" (or Hargis) and Hatfield.
No Duke or William Collier was mentioned in this genealogy.
Hopefully, this new information will shed some light on some new connections.
