COLLIERS OF MASS -- RESEARCH UPDATE 9-20-06
COLLIERS OF MASS--RESEARCH UPDATE 9-20-06
I and many generous contributors are continuing our work in preparing Volume Two of”The Colliers of Massachusetts” for publication. I anticipate that the final writing and editing of biographies and notes will be completed sometime in late Winter 2006-2007. Volume Two will cover American generations 6 through 8 of the descendants of Thomas and Susannah (UNKNOWN) Collier, who arrived in Hingham, Massachusetts in 1635. Generation 9 – known children of generation 8 – will be listed with names of spouses, where known, but detailed biographies will not be included in Volume Two.
The basic outline of Volume Two includes approximately 1,043 family groups in generations 6 – 8, and well over 4,000 Thomas Collier descendants when the generation 9 children are counted. The first listed member of generation 6 is # 77, Ezekiel Loring (b. March 30, 1741, Hull, Mass. – d. Bet. 1800 - December 24 1802 in Pownal or New Gloucester, Cumberland County, Maine), his wife Hannah Buxton. The last named individual in generation 8 is # 1120, James Freeman French (b. May 2, 1831, probably Lake County, Indiana – d. December 20, 1901, probably in Keokuk Falls, Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma), his wife Anna F. Allison. James and Anna had children who lived until 1943. Many other generation 9 “Colliers” lived well into the 20th century, including my own grandfather, Norman Randolph Collier of Southington, Ohio (b. October 29, 1872, Munson Township, Geauga County, Ohio– d. April 27, 1945, Southington, Trumbull County, Ohio)
Since the publication of Volume One of the Collier Genealogy I have received additional data from many Collier descendants, but I want to extend particular thanks to Joy Kielbasa of New York state for her exhaustive work on descendants of the Lorings of North Yarmouth, Maine. Her contributions have been invaluable to me. I have devoted my own special efforts to those of the family who remained in Massachusetts, and my own line, descended from Ephraim Bosworth (5) Collier (# 56, Volume One) and his son (to my best knowledge) Gershom (6) Collier “of Boston and Chesterfield, Mass.”), (# 157).
When Volume Two is completed and published, I will be retiring from the active genealogy field. Genealogy will, of course, remain a hobby for the rest of my life, but I will not attempt to bring the Collier family down to the present day.I will happily share my extensive “Colliers of Mass.” and “Collyers of New Jersey” database with any cousin who wishes to pursue the genealogy in a serious way. If there are no interested parties, I will deposit the research with the NEHGS in Boston.
------------
Since publication of Volume One of the Collier Genealogy in August 2004, I have received information on several additional “Collier” families who had descendants. At present there are an even dozen of these lines that are either certain, or have proof that is strong enough to warrant mentioning in Volume Two.Each will have a section in the volume. A short appendix on William Collier of Plymouth Colony - not believed related to Thomas, but an ancestor of several Thomas Collier descendants – will also be included. The 12 additional lines that will be included in Volume Two, with some additional notes by myself:
