I have recently found my connection to the Aroostook county, Maine Collier family.
Several geography issues make it difficult to trace this family and I have it mostly figured out.
--Maine split off from Mass. and became a sperate state in 1820.Aroostook county was formed due to the "Aroostook War", a non-shooting war over disputed land on the then-undrawn border between New Brunswick, Canada and Maine.Look up the Aroostook War on Wiki or elsewhere for more on this.
--The Colliers of Aroostook came from Ireland via New Brunswick. Some Colliers stayed in New Brunswick and others that did get to Maine went back to New Brunswick.
A great genealogy/history book on the area of New Brunswick that they inhabited is "Old North Esk on the Miramichi" published by the Miramichi Press.Link:

I can't recommend this book enough. It traces many family lines (including Collier and families related to them) and tells the history of the area to put it in context.
My direct ancestor Francis P. Towle (born ca. 1820) married Jane Collier and they lived in Orient, Aroostook, Maine (1840 and 1850 census) near several of her Collier relatives. They then moved to Waupaca county, Wisconsin (1860 and 1870 census) and, again several Colliers moved there too.Towles and Colliers can be traced in Wisconsin to this day.
Please contact me if any of this relates to you.I can provide more details.
