That's ok, Brad. How is this Martin Collier related to you? Do you have any idea where this branch came from? Do you have any estimate (no matter how shaky) of about when this individual might have lived?
My own "Martin" is actually Henry Martin Collier, b. Apr 10, 1815, in Washington, Knox Co., ME, m. Mahala Ripley May 3, 1846, in Washington, Knox Co., ME, d. Nov 12, 1877, in "location unknown". Henry Martin Collier is an older brother to my gr-grandfather, Cyrus Thomas Collier. Both are sons of Roland Collier, a Methodist minister in Union and Brooks, ME, and Lois Newhall. Thanks to the massive efforts of my cousin, Wade Collier of Lunenburg, Mass., I have a complete genealogy of this family all the way to our immigrant ancestor, Thomas Collier, who settled in Hingham, Mass., in 1635.
There are three large, distinct and unrelated Collier families that might be considered among the "founding families" of America:
1. Based originally in New England as early as 1635 (my own)
2. NY/PA/OH/IN, a Palatinate family originally named Kaljer/Caljer who first settled in NY in the early 1700's
3. Based originally (I think) in the Lee County area of VA as early as the 1630's, this family is responsible for most of the Colliers throughout the Deep South into AR, TX and OK.This family also has the greatest association with "Martin" as a given name.
Naturally, with much later immigration, there are several other much smaller and very difficult to trace Collier families that are not related to any of the three families discussed above. There are several folks active on this GenForum who, in the course of accumulating massive information on their own families, may have stumbled upon and filed information upon these minor families.
So, Brad, if you can come forth with ANY idea, no matter how wild or idiotic a guess you might think it is, one of us will be able to jump in and begin giving you some help.Until then, I wish you the best of luck in your quest.
Best regards,
Mike Collier
