John Collier, Marengo Co., AL, 1820/40's
The Rev. John Collier was a Methodist minister assigned to the Marengo Circuit (AL) in 1826.He married Caroline Jane Lucy on 3 June 1826 in Marengo Co.She was b. abt. 1809 in SC. They had four known offspring: Elvira b. 1833, James b. abt. 1835, Ellen b. abt. 1837, and Olivia b. abt. 1839.Rev. Collier left the Methodist church in 1829 and became a Baptist minister. He founded two Baptist churches in Marengo Co., the New Hope Baptist Church (now defunct) in Demopolis and the Baptist Church in Spring Hill which still exists.John Collier appears to have died sometime before 1843.His wife, Caroline, married Dr. Hugh McPhail, a Methodist minister and a physician, on 6 Feb 1843 in Marengo Co.They were living in Clarke Co., MS, at the time of the 1850 census.
