The author, George MacDonald, was descended from Alistair MacDonald, a half-brother of the chief of the clan at Glencoe. He and his family were not at home at the time of the massacre and did not return, going instead to Aberdeenshire. They changed the name, but later reclaimed the MacDonald name.
