Dear Ian,

I am descended from a large family of Colgates (or Colegates) who lived in the Chadwell Heath area for well over 100 years, and it seems very likely that you are part of the same family.

The only problem is that there were lots of them - for instance Thomas Colgate (who was born in around 1850) had seven brothers and sisters, and then had at least 16 children of his own. I've found a number of John Colgates, but the most recent of them was killed in the First World War so I don't think that's the right one.

If you'd like to send me an e-mail it would be interesting to swap notes and see if we can work out the connection.

Best wishes,

John
