I have noticed that as well, and am also curious. I descend
from Richard Colgate and Rebecca Herbert. Eleanor is certainly a woman of mystery. You are right, the land gift
suggests a connection to the Dorseys on the part of Eleanor or her deceased Herbert husband.
From tax lists I think Eleanor lived next to John Dorsey.
There is an entry in the IGI for Eleanor Herbert, which in the film of the underlying records, has no further sources for her birth. An individual named Jacob Gee Bigler entered the data in 1941 along with data for Richard Colgate and a John Dorsey, who he says was born in Kent Co. England in about 1635. Eleanor, Bigler says, was born in Kent County England in 1656.
Eleanor was deceased by 14 November 1743 when her will, written on 29 June 1743, was entered into probate in Anne Arundel County (county lines had changed and part of Baltimore County had been ceeded to Anne Arundel). In her will, she gave Burridge Scott, her daughter Rebecca's third husband, her plantations Herbert's Care and The Addition. To Eleanor Powell, daughter of James and Rebecca Powell (James was the deceased second husband of her daughter Rebecca) Eleanor gave a negro Boy called Jack, two cows and calves. To Helena Scott, daughter of Burridge and Rebecca Scott Eleanor gave a negro girl called Rachel. To the priest that was to bury her, Eleanor gave 12 pounds currency. The remainder of her estate was to go to Burridge Scott. Rebecca her daughter was to be her executor. Eleanor made her mark rather than signing her name, and the witnesses were Daniel Hearn, James McCollum and Basil Dorsey. When the estate was inventoried in June of 1744, the appraisers were Joshua Dorsey and Basil Dorsey, creditors were Charles Cole and James Walker, next of kin were listed as Elinor Ensor (is this Eleanor Powell, now married?), and John Talbot, who was the husband of Eleanor Herbert's granddaughter Prudence.
