John Coleman - WV Civil War hostage
On April 30, 1863, a group of workmen for the Baltimore & Ohio RR were repairing a railroad bridge near Bridgeport, WV. They were captured by forces from the 1st Maryland Cavalry, under the command of Gen. W.E. Jones (this was part of the Jones-Imboden raid). Among these workers was a John Coleman. The bridge workers were taken to Richmond and imprisoned in Castle Thunder for several months. They were held as hostages, a common practice. I am interested in the incident and in the experiences of all the prisoners. One of the prisoners was a great-granduncle of mine, but at this point I am fascinated with the whole story. If there are any family stories about John Coleman's captivity, I'd love to hear them, and will be delighted to share my research with interested parties.
