Francis Coleman, 1744-1823 Washington Co., AL - wife Margaret DANIEL?
I've seen variations of this COLEMAN-DANIEL marriage listed in several genealogies and family trees:
"Margaret Daniel, born about 1750 [or born 29 Dec. 1750, died 17 April 1804], married about 1767, Colonel Francis Coleman."
The genealogies that do include sources give James Daniel's 1763 will as proof, saying that James named his daughter Margaret as wife of "Francis Coleman." Several of these family trees and books have Margaret DANIEL's exact birth date as 29 December 1750 and death date as 17 April 1804, daughter of James DANIEL (who died 1763) & Jean KELSO. I assume those exact birth and death dates are from a bible record, but haven't yet seen such a source.
The late governor J.P. Coleman's book: "Robert Coleman from Virginia to Texas, 1652-1965" also cites the same Francis Coleman-Margaret Daniel marriage fact/theory, giving James Daniel's 1763 will as proof.
Abstracts of the 1763 will of JAMES DANIEL of Amelia/Prince Edward County, Virginia were posted on the DANIEL forum in 2002, stating that James' will was dated (written) 25 March 1763. However, the abstracts don't include the particular part of the will that supposedly names James Daniel's daughter "Margaret" as the wife of "Francis Coleman" or "Colonel Francis Coleman."
A marriage date of "about 1767" gives Margaret Daniel a reasonable marriage age (see my notes below), and fits the known children of Francis Coleman (1744-1823) and wife Margaret, those children being born 1768+, but doesn't match Margaret Daniel, barely age 12, being already married to a "Francis Coleman" when her father James Daniel wrote his will in 1763.
So, which is correct? Was Margaret Daniel married to "Francis Coleman" before 25 March 1763, or not? Was Francis' wife Margaret a DANIEL, or was she someone else, a different "Margaret"?
There were so many men named "Francis Coleman" in Virginia and the Carolinas in the 1700s, I'm doubtful -- without more substantial proof -- that Francis COLEMAN (1744-1823) who migrated from South Carolina to Jefferson Co., Georgia, and then settled on the Tombigbee River in Washington County, Mississippi Territory (later the state of Alabama) circa 1800, married Margaret DANIEL (born 29 December 1750) BEFORE March 1763... when Margaret would have been barely 12 years old. In other words, Margaret Daniel wasn't 12 until December 29, 1762. Did she marry Francis Coleman in Jan.-Feb.-March 1763, at age 12? Or did someone mistake the records, and James DANIEL didn't name his daughter Margaret as being the wife of "Francis Coleman" in 1763, but her name appeared that way in later estate papers as her father's legacies were distributed, say circa 1766-1767?
I'd love to have more DANIEL data to go by, and hope that someone researching COLEMANS or DANIELS has a copy of James Daniel's original 1763 will and estate papers. I'll be glad to share whatever I've gathered on the COLEMANS.
Regards,
Annie Crenshaw
