In the 1880 US Census I believe this is the family you seek:
Location: Boydton, Mecklenburg, VA
Thos D. Coleman age 46 b. VA b. 1834 parents b. VA
wife: Lucy A. Coleman age 46 b. VA b. 1834 parents b. VA
children listed:
Jefferson D. Coleman age 18 b. Va (b. 1862)
Rosa Coleman age 14 b. VA (b. 1866)
Ida Coleman age 11 b. VA (b. 1869)
thomas Coleman age 9 b. Va (b. 1871)
Lulie Coleman age 6 b. VA (b. 1874)
I believe the THOS D. should be Thomas Burwell Coleman
and since his brother had a fancy three part name
William Henry Coleman, that it was customary for
the person to have nice three names.
If you could access the actual view of the census
it might prove to be a B and not a D.
OR: It may be his name was not Burwell, but Durwell or similar?
Anyway, I hope this helps. The fact that the family had children born during the Civil War era shows the father
was not in the military or at least was stationer nearby.
Perhaps he was lame?
Also you can find out about the plantation by
using www.google.com and going to the "Advanced search" and "exact phrase" - there are even pictures of the place.
