Melody - I think this may be your William....first I checked the census. In 1850 & 1860 there aren't that many Coles in Otsego and there is only one William.

1850 Butternuts, Otsego

Richard S Cole 30 NY
Elizabeth 31 NY
Mary E 5 NY
WILLIAM R 4 NY
Emily L 2 NY
Ida M 0 NY

1860 Morris, Otsego

Richard S 40
Elizabeth 41
Mary 15
WILLIAM 13
Emily 13
Ida 12
Alice 8
Jenny 5
Hobert 3
Carrie 1

Here's the best part - if you go to findagrave.com you can find some info there - plug in Cole, NY & Otsego:

Brookside Cemetery, Gilbertsville, Otsego NY:

William R Cole b 1847 eldest son of Richard & Elizabeth Rockwell Cole d 23 Feb 1872 in TEXAS

Carrie Cole (sister) b 15 Jan 1858 d 16 Aug 1860

Richard S Cole b 14 Oct 1820 d 21 Jan 1917 (had 8 children, outlived two wives) (according to census parents b VT & MA)

Richard Cole (grandfather of William) b Mar 1786 d 11 Apr 1878, had 10 children

From the Morris Chronicle - Town of Morris deaths - Mrs R Cole d 26 Oct 1880 age 61 (probably Elizabeth Rockwell)

A check for trees at Ancestry:

Richard Safford Cole b 14 Oct 1820, Butternuts, Otsego, NY d 21 Jan 1917 Morris, Otsego m 27 Dec 1845 Elizabeth Rockwell b 1819 NY d 26 Oct 1880 Morris m #2 17 Sep 1886 in Butternuts Sarah Jane Tobey b 24 Nov 1830 Morris d 09 Mar 1898 Morris

Son of Richard Cole b Mar 1786 Great Barrington MA d 12 Apr 1878 Butternuts m Emily Morgan b 30 Nov 1791 Wilmington, VT d 19 Feb 1871 Butternuts

It appears that this line goes back to the immigrant, James Cole b 1600 London d 1688 Plymouth MA thru his son Hugh - the line is:

William
Richard S
Richard
William
Samuel
Joseph
John
Hugh
James

If you Google James Cole 1600 you will find lots of info about him - he apparently was quite a character. Also Google Hugh Cole b 1627 & Mary Foxwell - they were fined once for "licentious behavior before marriage" & Hugh had an interesting life. James Cole married Mary Tibbes, NOT Mary Lobel as some say so be careful of this.

I hope this helps a little. I am desc from Hugh also. If there's more I can try to help with you can email me at karimagameel@yahoo.com if you wish. Vicky in AZ
