Coldings - Barnwell Co., SC

I am trying to identify both the wife and daughter of John Hicks who was in Barnwell Co. in the late 1700's and died c1827. From his age in the 1800 and 1810 census, he was born between 1755-65. I believe that it's possible he may have married into the Colding family. I have found two deeds that make reference to him:

1. Barnwell Dist, SC Office of Clerk of Court Page 176: John Hix and John Colding sold to Samuel Maner for $200, 100 A "where the said John Hix now lives - - being part of a tract of land laid out by Blanchard Colding at at the time of survey joining land of Joseph Bryan SW and land of Mucklefuss(?) SE -- references to be had to the plot and survey of Robert Shiddrar run Sept 30, 1795. March 18, 1809. Witnesses Stephen Owens, Mary Owens".

I am assuming from the dates found in the deed that the "John Colding" cited above is most probably the son of Blanchard and Temperance Colding. "Blanchard Colding" is most probably Blanchard Colding, Jr., also a son of Blanchard and Temperance Colding. "Joseph Bryan" is either the son of William Bryan and Elizabeth Moore, or is William Bryan's brother. The identity of "Samuel Maner" is not certain but he may have been the same as served with his brother, William in Gen. Francis Marion's brigade in the Rev. War, was married to Mary May and at one time lived in the neighborhood of Santee per May family history.

2. 7 Nov 1827 - Barnwell Deed Book S, pg 415-416, LDS microfilm, renumbered BW15 at SC Archives reads "John Hicks of state and district aforesaid for natural love and affection to my grand children Sarah Rebecca Reeves, Charles Benefield Reeves, and Mary Frances Reeves of the district aforesaid, at my death, tract of 101 acres in the district aforesaid on waters of Coosawhatchie. ..dated 7 Nov 1827. John Hicks (X). Wit: William D. Bryan, Joseph C. Bryan, Rebeckah Bryan. Proved by oath of William D. Byan 7 Nov 1827 before Jos. Bryan, J.P".

It has been suggested that "Joseph C. Bryan" is the son of William Bryan and Elizabeth Moore. "Rebeckah" is his wife, Rebecca Deewees and "William D. Bryan" is their son. It is also possible, however, that both "William D." and "Joseph C." are the sons of Rebecca Deewees Bryan and "Jos. Bryan, J.P." is her husband and father of the two sons.

John Hicks first appears in the 1790 Orangeburg District census, pg 164. Many of the Bryans and Coldings are also in this census. In 1800, John Hicks is in Barnwell Co., SC next to the residence of Henry Colding, husband of Jeanette Bryan. In the 1810 census, John Hicks is next to the residence of Jacob Kittles who is the husband of Lovice Colding, sister of Henry Colding. The 1820 census is alphabetical and there is a John Hicks (over 45) and a John G. Hicks (26-45) in the census. It is the wife of the older John Hicks that I'm seeking. (The younger John G. Hicks is believed to have been married to Sarah J. Colding, dau of Henry Colding and Jennett Bryan and could possibly be the son of the older Hicks.)

John Hicks daughter was apparently married to a Reeves. Some researchers have suggested that he is Francis Reeves. I am still trying to find evidence to support or reject this assumption. I descend from Sarah Rebecca Reeves and her husband, Charles Elison Stone. They left SC after 1850 and removed to Campellton, FL. After Sarah's death, Charles remarried and settled in Escambia Co., AL.

Would appreciate any help anyone can provide in identifying the wife of John Hicks.

thanks,
Annette
