Hi there, I am writing to you in the hope that you may be able to assist with my family history research. I am the grand daughter of Albert Colelough. I am trying to trace his family descendants. So far all I know that His father was James Colelough and Mother was Jennie Eva Vaughan. His grand parents were, William Colclough who married Harriet Morgan/Mergan. Jennie Eva’s parents were, William Vaughan who married Catherine Birdsall. As the story goes James Coleclough as he was then known, his name was incorrectly spelt and they dropped the C from Coleclough when he came to Australia. James continued to use the Colelough. James Colelough arrived in Australia about 1913 and became a police officer in Yass and later died in Newcastle. I am trying to trace his parents and there marriage. When James was born his parents were living in Staffordshire, England. According to the 1901 Census, Harriet was a widow, and had several children, Elizabeth, Edward, William Coleclough. It is shown on Harriet’s death certificate as an R Coleclough , son as a witness at the time of her death. In the 1881 Census in shows another daughter Jane and son John. William Coleclough and Harriet Mergan/Morgan were married in 1874, in Wigan England. It shows William as having a father William, from Ireland and both there occupations are Tailors. Harriet Mergan’s father was John Mergan also from Ireland, and his occupation was GameKeeper. Harriet was also living in Wigan at the time. I am hoping you may be able to help with any details you can provide. It is possible that even though our surnames are spelt differently, we could be still related. You may be a descendant of William, Jane, Edward, Elizabeth or R Coleclough, who may have came to Australia in the early 1900’s. In the 1936-38 electoral roll it shows a William Coleclough living in Merewether Newcastle, James and Jennie were also living in Merewether Newcastle at the time, could this be a coincident or were they brothers. I look forward to hearing from you, Leah Cooke Notify Administrator about this message?
