The identity of Susannah Coburn "of Dracut" (b: ca 1721, married Stephen Fletcher) is not known, however, there is reason to believe that her father was Captain John Colburn of Dracut. One reason for making this identification is that Captain John Colburn was the administrator of her father-in-law's (Sergeant William Fletcher) estate 22 Mar 1742. Winifred Lovering Holman notes in "Robert Fletcher of Concord, Massachusetts Bay, 1637: A Study of His Life and Family from the New England Records," the following: "Sergeant William died intestate, Stephen Fletcher husbandman, with Stephen Pierce the same, both of Chelmsford, and John Cobburn of Dracut, as his sureties, was appointed the administrator, 29 Mar. 1742. The division between the children was to Stephen as eldest son, to William Fletcher a son, and to William Prockter who married Lucy Fletcher one of the daughters of said deceased, also to Tabitha and Thankful Fletcher, both daughters, this was also dated 1742. The inventory mentions the fact that his wife had also deceased. (Middlesex Probate, 7953.)" A second reason for identifying Susanna as an unrecorded child of Captain John is that her approximated birth date fits in well with the birth dates of his other children. A third reason for identifying Captain John Colburn of Dracut as Susanna's father is the fact that Stephen and Susanna chose two names for their children, namely Sarah and Uriah, that were fmaily names selected by John and Sarah Colburn, but not selected by William and Tabitha Fletcher. A fourth and final reason for making this identification is that Captian John Colburn had close ties with Chelmsford. Not only was he born there, but both of his wives were as well. Although we may never know with absolute certainty who Susanna's parents were, there are solid reasons for identifying them as Captain John and Sarah Colburn. Other courses of research which could possibly provide conclusive proof would be John's will and gravestone records, if they exist. I would welcome any feedback from others researching this family.
