John Oliver Colbert in North Carolina

I am searching for any of my ancestors. I don't really know where to begin. I live in North Carolina and only know my family a couple of generations back. My grandfather's name was John Oliver Colbert and he was married to Susie Patterson Colbert. If anyone has any information that would be helpful I would greatly appreciate it. I think I heard someone in my family say that they believe our family originated in Ireland but am not sure. Thanks in advance for your help!!!
