I'm from Galway, Ireland but family from Waterford, Ireland (grandparents - Thomas and Helen Colbert). We were always told that two brothers had come to Ireland from France either as persecuted Hugenots or, more fancifully as relations of Jean-Babtiste Colbert, Finance Minister to Louis IV of France. Before that, the Colberts were apparently mercenaries from Scotland (Cuilbeard) who settled in France in the 1200's? Before that, they came from Scandinavia, possibly as part of the Viking raids on the west coasts of Scotland and England. Who knows if its true. By the way the two French brothers split up - one settling in Waterford, the other in Cork and over the years lost touch, apparently, Which is why today there are two main branches in Ireland - one pronounced "coal - bert" (Waterford) and the other "coll - bert" (limerick).
