Sorry Jan - this posting didn't get to me and I just now found it on the forum! My ancestor, Samuel Davis, very likely met and married Rachel Colbert in Indiana. The biographical sketch I have of Joseph Davis says that he was born in Fountain Co., Indiana in 1846 - the son of Samuel Davis and Rachel Colbert (2nd wife). She was born in Somerset Co., Md. as were her parents, Isaac and Alsey Colbert. Sam and Rachel moved to Illinois later but I know nothing about her parents. I'm sure she had siblings - they may have remained in Indiana. At this point I have no valid information on the Colbert's in my ancestry!
Sam and Rachel had 10 children - Mary, Minerva, Robert, David (my line), Emily, Nancy Armanda, Samuel, Joseph and Alice. I finally found another Davis cousin a few months ago - she descends from Alice Davis, my 3rd great-grandfather David's younger sister. Families often use similar naming patterns - do these names look familiar to you?
I'd love to hear more about your Colbert's of Indiana!!
