As if you needed more feedback on the Colbert name at this point... Your January 6 response seems to be closest to home. There is a getnleman by the name of Norbert Colbert doing study on the name in England. I cannot recall where I got the rest of this info, but it is on the Genforum page. Apparently the name is ORIGINALLY of Scandinavian origin as it bears strong similarity to names and words of that origin. It is hypothesized that the Vikings left the name behind in Scotland some time around 900-1000 AD. (Colbert, Coloberd, Colbearth, Colobearth, etc.) The Scots were callled upon by the French to help in the Crusades. Thus the name went there. The Colberts were persecuted in France as Huguenots, so many moved to Ireland where two brothers parted ways to counties Cork and Limerick which accounts for the pronunciatiation of the "o" as hard or soft, and then there was that darned potato famine thing: U.S. and Canada. If you ever plan to return to the land of your native ancestry, you'd better get a package plan! Hope this helps.
