My great-grandfather was Earl Colbert, married to Sarah Benefiel.... They lived for a time near Cairo, Illinois, then moved to near Monmouth, where Earl was postmaster. He was in the Civil War, I have his diary. His children included my grandfather, Frederick Earl Colbert, and Louis (Newt) Colbert. These people lived in the Monmouth, Illinois area, altho Frederick Earl left that area before 1920 and was no longer seen by the family, except for one week in 1942 when he showed up at my father's house in California, stayed a week and then disappeared again. Frederick Earl and his wife, Diette Gordon, had several children, including my father, James Raymond Colbert (d - 1994, Sparta, WI), Harry Victor Colbert, Mahlon Gordon Colbert, Helen Gertrude Colbert Stevenson, Ione Colbert Johnson, Mildred Colbert Ashbecker and Leola Colbert, all deceased. I am trying to find Colberts going back before Earl. I think he came from Kentucky, some said from Indiana. I believe there were Native Americans back in the lineage, as my Aunt Helen told of how her grandmother, Sarah Benefiel, Earl's wife, had a family album with some very old photos of people she called Indians.
