Jean-Baptiste Colbert, Minister of Finance to Louis XIV, deposited old family deeds with Pierre d'Hozier, genealogist for Louis XIV and Hozier authenticated the Colbert family was descended from St. Cuthbert (630-687 A.D,)an English Christian prelate and his Scots wife, Marie de Lindsay of Castlehill, Iverness, Scotland. This was important to Colbert, whose title was purchased and whose French ancestors were "only" wool merchants, although extremely wealthy. Ironically, the Scottish ancestor of whom he was so proud was himself originally a shepherd!
