Though of French background I was told the name is of Scottish origin - moved to France in 12thC(Culbert/Culbertson) - origin the barons of castlehill (???).

Lived in France for many years and when I mentioned the idea of Scots origin was told (by well educated Frenchmen) that it was so and that Jean Baptiste Colbert was reportedly extremely proud of his Scottish ancestry.

Recently started actually checking so no proof whatsoever ;-)
