Cheryl, Thanks for your reply. Son Jack was listed as "Jackson" in the 1870 census living with Richard, age 41, Mary, age 33 and little Richard, age 10/12. The 1860 and 1880 census list him as Jack. My curiosity was aroused by a letter written sixty years ago by an aunt reminiscing about the marriage of my great grandmother to Jack with no reference to a last name. She wrote about Jack being from a weathly, socially prominent family in a town on the Texas Frontier. The letter did not mention a last name nor the name of the town. However, the 1880 census lists my great grandmother as "Minnie" Cook", divorced. I found her marriage in Baylor County Texas in Dec 1879 to A. J. Cooke. I also found a reference to Waco as being on the Texas frontier...whatever that means. I do not mean to suggest that I believe that she was married to Jack Coke but there are enough similarities that I wanted to attempt to find out more about Jack. The letter also mentioned that the marriage was very brief and that Jack left and never returned. He wrote a letter to my great grandmother saying he wasn't coming back. It is also interesting that the 1880 census was apparently taken on June 7 and 8, 1880 for the page that includes Jack. This would be after he died. Do you know how Jack died? I have speculated that if it was Jack Coke who was married to Minnie Wilson, that his family pressure may have forced his actions. Minnie was from the hills of Kentucky and was orphaned at the age of 6 or so. I could see how this might not fit in the plans Richard may have had for his son. Regardless, I appreciate your help and if you have anything else to share on this family, I would appreciate it...even if its only your two cents worth of ideas.
