Verrecchia, Coia, DiMeo, Philadelphia, Italy

My name is Peter J. Verrecchia. I was born in Philadelphia in 1964.

My parents were:

Alfredo (Fred) Verrecchia (1916-1996, Philadephia) and Maria (Gloria) Tumolo (1923-1966, Philadelphia, family from Foggia.)

Fred's parents were Pietro Verrecchia (1888, plus or minus 1 yr. - 1960, now we think Filignano) and Gulia (Julia) DiMeo (1894-1981, same)

Gulia came to this country (Philadelphia) in appx 1910 with her parents and her brother Camillo (Tom) and maybe others (grandmom's siblings were: Camillo, Nicandro, Giuseppi, Millina, Christina, Rosa, Brigitta, a few were born in Philadelphia.) Gulia's parents were named Nicandro DiMeo and Concetta Coia. I imagine that these two were born arround 1870. I was never close to any of my grandmother's siblings, the last of whom died in Florida in the last 10 years. Many children and grandchildren of these must still live in the Philadelphia area. Uncle Tom (Camillo DiMeo, born 1892) and his family owned a matress company in South Philadelphia for decades.

My grandmother told me that the boat from Italy came directly to Philadelphia. They walked for a few blocks and found a house (the 500 block of Queen Street.) The point of entry that she must have been referring to is marked by one of those local history signs near Old Swede's Church at the Delaware River and Washington Avenues. Philadelphia is one of the biggest freshwater ports in the world. I imagine that this had something to do with the avoidance of Ellis Island.
