Fascinating. The earliest Jews who came to the United States were of Portuguese descent. So the girl was probably right. The Jews of South Carolina were Sephardic and came from Portugal, Holland, England, etc. They were those or the children of those who left/fled after the inquisition from Spain. Some also went to Brazil and the Caribbean. Also there is a list of South Carolina Jews from +/-1800 in this book: The Jews of South Carolina: from the earliest times to the present day By Barnett Abraham Elzas. pages 126 - 134 Notify Administrator about this message?
