Ms. Pasha and I have different ideas about the likely parents of Rosa Ella Cohen, great-grandmother of Michelle Robinson Obama. I think it most likely her birth year would be about 1895. If so, the census for Bennettsville, S.C. for 1910 has a girl of that name and likely age with the father listed as "Sickle" and the mother as Alice. I would guess that the name Sickle is a corruption of "Little Isaac". I agree with Ms. Pasha that the descent would likely be from the "Black Cohens" of Georgetown, S.C., and that the move inland would have been "temporary". By 1920 and 1930 Rosa Ella was married to Fraser Robinson, and living in Georgetown. So far I have no theory about Sickle Cohen's ancestry, and am fearful that may be almost impossible to determine. As Ms. Pasha (who is the authority on this subject) has written elsewhere, Thomas and Joseph Cohen seem to have been children of mixed race, probably fathered by Solomon Cohen, who died in Georgetown in 1835. Many "Black Cohens" lived in Georgetown, however, according to the 1870 census, most of whom were probably not in the line of Thomas and Joseph. Howard Sachs
