If anyone is still researching John A. Cohen, on the Tallapoosa, Alabama 1860 census, you may be interested in knowing that the Lawrence Cohen there is probably his brother. Both are shown on the 1855 special census for Alabama, Chambers County, Alabama. Lawrence was on the 1840 Spartanburg SC census, next door is his mother, Jemima. His father is believed to be the William Cowan on the 1810 Union County, SC census and died later. William and Thomas Coan/Cohen/Cowan are sons of Joseph and Rachel Cowan, on the 1790/1800 Union SC census. This family is Jewish, not Scotch-Irish, however. The Thomas Jefferson Cohen in Pickens Alabama is the son of Thomas Cohen, or cousins to John Alexander and Lawence L. Cohen. Since Lawrence and John's father died young, these boys were probably very close to their Uncle Thomas, and were raised close by. Elezene Cohen Bryant of Calhoun, Alabama is the sister to John and Lawrence. It is probable that James Cohen/Coan of Alabama is also a brother or cousin to this family, as most left the Carolinas because of the soil depletion by cotton. Jemima Cohen may have been a Kirby.
