Joanne thank you very much for all this information. My head is swimming. I have always been lost on my Cohens and Mitchells before their 1846 wedding in Newton County, Georgia. I tried to connect to the Pickens County group because Ella Jane and Lawrence were there for a short time. Never on a census however (family hand me down info). It was also handed down in the family that Lawrence was Jewish. However from the marriage to Ella Jane on in 1846 they (the family) became staunch Southern Baptist. Could this Jewish lad from South Carolina have gone to Newton County in 1846 and married this Baptist lass and gone astray? It sure seems that way. Lawrence and Ella Jane were very migrant. They appear on the Chambers County, Al census in 1855 (special census), the Tallapoosa County census in 1860 and then back to Troup County, Ga in 1870. The census records reflect the family as being able to read and write. This fact, along with family records make me accept the COHEN spelling as the correct spelling. Lawrence would have been born in 1815 in SC according to census records. Notify Administrator about this message?
