Carole,
My grandfather's last name was similar. Not really sure how it was spelled, always assumed it was Kahanovitch or Kaganovitch. Although he had a large family, he alone immigrated in 1910.

My father thought there was some contact with the family, he remebers letters when he was young, but nothing after WW1. His father's name was Sael and I believe they were from the Minsk area.

Does any of this sound familiar to you?
