Derek

1881 census gives John Cogle as being aboard the merchant vessel "Vigilant", aged 33, married, occp:AB Seaman
"Vigilant ", commanded by Commander Alexander McDonald, aged 30, b.England, crew consisting of First Mate, Botswain, Carpenter, 5 AB Seamen (inc John Cogle), 2 O Seamen and the ships boy!

At this time John's wife Grace (nee Johnson) was living with her parents, their 1881 census record is as follows-

Nth Booth, Toft, Delting, Shetland

Magnus Johnson, 62, Farmer of 4 arable acres
Mary, wife, 56, b.Northmavine
Grace Cogle, dau, 31, married(to John Cogle), occp:knitter
Andrew Johnson, son, 18
Catherine Johnson, sister of Magnus, 75,knitter, b.Northmavine
Mary Cogle, granddaughter of Magnus, 5, b.Delting
Gilbert Cogle, grandson of Magnus, 3, b.Delting

Hope this of some use.

Iain
