Footnotes:
1. The U.S. Census taken on 14 Jun 1880 in Precinct 5, Wise Co., Texas, shows that James P. and Ruany Cockburn had a 13-year-old son named William T. Cockburn, who was born in Arkansas.According to very interesting notes from descedants of Odie Cogburn, Will was shot and killed by his wife's father-in-law, which is probably why he can't be found on the 1900 census: "Will Cogburn – Wife left to go to her parents in Okla. Expecting baby. Will killed – wife father came to E. tex. around Clarksville to
claim cattle for baby – Cogburn Sr. shot this man – Clan moved somewhere in W. Tex. then moved to OK. Will Cogburn (Bob’s Bro.) was shot in McAlister by wife’s father. Bob’s Siblings – Allie, Susie, Delie, Will, Lonnie [Loney] ..."
2. James’ middle initial, "C," is apparently written over a "P."Other records for James show both C and P as his middle initial.
3. The 1900 U.S. Census in Chickasaw, Indian Territory, shows that Robert Cogburn, born in Oct 1870 in Texas, was living with his brother, Newt Cogburn. This indicates that “Dennis L. Cockburn” used the name "Robert Cogburn" later in life. The “[D?]inis Bob Cogburn” in this Bible, who died in Apr 1906, was probably the same man.
4. The first name of this entry is illegible, but the date is exactly the same as the date of birth for “Lonso Cockburn” that is entered on the Marriages page.It appears that Lonso was entered twice in the Bible (once as “Lonso Cockburn” and again as “Lonso Cogburn”).
5. Odie Cogburn was born on 14 Aug 1895, according to his headstone at Coalgate Cemetery in Coalgate, Coal Co., Oklahoma.According to his WWI draft registration card, he was born exactly one year later, on 14 Aug 1896.According to his funeral record, Odie was the son of “Bob Cogburn.”
6. Addy’s year of birth is illegible, but her date of birth would have fallen on 14 May 1878 or 14 May 1879.She would have been born at least nine months after the birth of “Aly Dexter” on 29 Nov 1876 and nine months before the birth of “Ally Dosha” on 10 Aug 1880.Therefore, she could not have been born on 14 May 1877 or 14 May 1880.The 1880 census record indicates that she was born circa 1877, but since she could not have been born in May 1877, she was probably born in May 1878.
7. I am unsure where exactly "[Maude?] Cogburn" fits into the family tree, but according to the 03 Apr 1930 Census in Justice Precinct 4, Red River, Texas, there is a James D. Cogburn (with all of the correct information for James P. Cogburn; i.e., the correct birth date and place and parents' birth places) living with an alleged "daughter" named "Maud Rumans":
1) *James D. Cogburn, Head, Age: 85, Place of Birth: Georgia, Father's Place of Birth: Georgia, Mother's Place of Birth: North Carolina
2) Maud Rumans, Daughter, Age: 43, Place of Birth: Oklahoma, Mother's Place of Birth: Arkansas, Father's Place of Birth: Arkansas, Father's Place of Birth: Arkansas
3) Jay D. Mooningham, Grandson, Age: 5, Place of Birth: Oklahoma, Father's Place of Birth: Tennessee, Mother's Place of Birth: Texas
As you see, the birthplace of Maude's father would be incorrect if her father was James, but nonetheless, it is very possible that Maude was a child of James and his wife because I have only accounted for 13 children, and according to the 13 Jun 1900 Census in Justice Precinct 2, Hood, Texas, "James N. Cogburn" and "Ruanna Cogburn" had 15 children. The 13 known children, in order of birth, are as follows: William T., James C. [or P.], Dennis L. [a.k.a. Robert or Bob], Andrew D., Newton Jasper [a.k.a. Newt], Allie Dexter, Addy Alden, Allie Dosha, Susan Ida, Loney Clark, Sallie, Alonzo [a.k.a. Lonso], and Delia Pauline.
8.I have not been able to trace the Vance family in Red River Co., Texas, at all. Does anyone know how the Cogburns were related to the Vances?
