Yeah I believe Henry does say he was born in NC but as I have found over the years it may or may not mean anything.
John, his father, has some records in Campbell county probably 1810-1820 which I do not have, but we also know John was living in Greene Co at the same time. Many times people bought and sold land in different counties, visited and left records etc ... adds to the interesting life of these folks ... the stuff I am interested in finding i.e. who were these ancestors of mine?
John of Edgefield was certainly in SC by 1765 as a Lars Rambo deed dated 1765 mentioned John Cogburn's land bounding Rambo's land. I have a record fragament of a John Cockburn dated 1759 from Ga. I don't know if this is our cousin or not. But what is interesting is the Rambo records. Lars had land on the Hico in Orange Co where by coincidence Michael also had land. I can't get a fix on when Lars left for SC but obviously by 1765. The Rambo's had been in NC since 1755 but I haven't found any records of Cogburn at that early date in the same area. The Rambo's came from Lunenburg Co Va but again I haven't found any Cogburn records there. I suspect Michael came sometime about 1760 from Va and John left with Lars ... well whenever they left for SC.
I have often wondered if the brothers stayed in communication.
I have a lot of info on Jonathan Cockburn/Cogburn/Coburn and family. I had thought there may be a connection but doesn;'t seem so encouraging now.
There is a family of Cockburn/Cogburn's in Hanover Va. I have a little on them but they don't have the "right" appeal, so I temporarily abandoned them for now.
I don't think people ask enough questions.
