Hello,
My great great grandfathers name was Jesse Cogbill, nothing to the man you refer to. He came from South Warwickshire in England and was born and grew up in a village called Long Compton. He later moved (in the 1850's) to the nearby village of Shipston on Stour, just a few miles from Stratford upon Avon. I just thought how strange it was to come accross another person with the same name as it is an unusual name. i am intrigued about the American Cogbill's and wonder if there is anyone who knows where they came from originally. Did they come from South Warwickshire and perhaps emigrate to the US? I also know that the correct and original spelling of the name is Cockbill. Owing to high levels of illiteracy among the working classes in past times, it was not at all uncommon for the spelling of names to change. Hope this is of some interest.
