Laurie, Don't know if this will help you any, but my ancesters are traced back through Salem Township, Livingston County, & Cave-in Rock Kentucky area & then from there (I'm still searching) but I believe then from Northeast, NC & southestern VA area. You can read below to see if any of my great grandfathers names might ring a bell. I have the name of their spouses. This is some of the information I have so far that has been recorded in our family bible and from other notes that has been passed down. There is a tradition that the Cofield name came from Scottish surname Scofield: that two brothers Robert & Steven came to the US around 1778, one of whom dropped the "S". (Dr. Robert Bert Cofield of Cincinnati came across this information somewhere. His widow, Clara, in recent years also heard a similar story from someone around Dayton, Ohio.)(?????) However, there were Cofields & Coffield in Virginia at the time of the American Revolution (first census, 1783, Nansemond County, VA.), and in North Carolina (but Halifax County land records for late 1700s disclosed no Steven or Robert when searched in 1965 by some of my relatives who also visited the tiny town of Cofield in Hartford County -- where the Court House has twice been destroyed by fire, once during the Civil War, & in Winston. It seems rather likely that Robert dropped an "f" when he came to Indiana as the name appears as "Coffield" in the 1830 census of Salem Township, Livingston County, Kentucky, whence Robert came to Indiana in 1834 or 1835 (or the census taker misspelled the name). That part of Livingston County became Crittenden County in 1842. There is a Coffield Fork of Deer Creek there. Robert Cofield, son of Steven & wife ? (Sheppard) Cofield, was born near Roanoke Rapids, Halifax County, NC, August 5, 1800, and some years later migrated to Livingston County, KY. The 1810 KY census lists a Robert and a Benjamin Coffield; Isaac and two Roberts appear in the 1830 census. About 1825 Robert Cofield married Amanda Wallingford in Shawneetown, IL. She was born June 16, 1806, near Limestone (now Maysville) in Mason County. (or possibly in Fleming County. where there is a little town of Wallingford). This is what I have so far: Kenneth Allan Cofield; b. March 7, 1955 Cincinnati, Ohio Father: Hubert Caryle Cofield b. If you or anyone else who reads this has anymore data; please share it with me. The missing links to the Cofield family on my side would appreciate it.
