Information about the Cofield's who settled in Southeastern Indiana

My ancesters I thought and/or was told originally came from Scotland and Germany and settled somewhere around the coastal North Carolina / Virginia region we believe around the mid 1700 from what has been documented in our family bible. I've been told at one time my ancesters were slave owners and many of the slaves adopted their owner's surname. I have found very few white people with my last name, but many African Americans. I grew up in southeastern Indiana next to Cincinnati and my original home town was very proactive with the underground railroad. I have a family picture dating back to the 1850's of my great-great-great grandmother. The period leading up to the 1700 - 1850 in my research is very sketchy & missing many links. My family believes the Cofield's left the North Carolina / Virginia region sometime during that period in history. Many of my family members still live and/or are buried in southeastern Indiana, but I live just north of Jacksonville, Florida. My wife & I are planning a trip to Cofield, North Carolina this summer (2007) to see if there are any correlation between the two & determine if in fact that is where my ancesters originally came too when they arrived in the US. My family's spelling only has one (f) in it. If my descendants can be traced all the way back to Gresham Coffield of 1638; @ what period in history did the single (f) and/or spelling of Cofield come to be? I read somewhere that many of the African American Cofield's in the Western Florida, LA, Al. & Texas area originated from a Caucasian plantation owner who lived in the Tampa, FL area. Please help me out on my history.

I noticed there is a African American Cofield family who has a web site of their family reunion. I would like to learn more about you & your family to see if we can put the missing pieces together of the Cofield puzzle so we can see if we are all related somehow.

If anyone has any of the missing pieces, please reply back.

Thanks for your time, Kenneth A. Cofield
