The Cofields in Randolph County AL that I descend from are Caucasian, but I know there are numerous African-American Cofields here in the Atlanta area. I have also seen several African-American Cofield families in the 1920 Randolph County census. Most Caucasian Cofield/Coffield families in the South are descended from Gresham Coffield, who arrived in VA in 1638. His descendants lived in VA, NC, GA, and AL by the 1800s. None of the Randolph County Cofields were slaveowners, though our relatives in Troup County, GA (across the state line from Randolph County) were in the 1850s. I've long wondered what, if any, connection(s) there were/are between the Caucasian and African-American Cofield families. I don't know if I can help, but I'll be glad to try. I do have extensive information on the Randolph County Caucasian Cofields and some

on other lines of Gresham's descendants.
