John of Washington may be connected to a line of David Cofields/Coffields who were in North Carolina in the 1700s. The name David appears in the John of Washington line, and a descendant told me that family legend told of an ancestor named David. The name Benjamin appears in the John of Washington line, but does not in the descendants of Gresham's undoubted sons Willis and Thomas Nathan. I think that Gresham was son of William and Mary Pamelia Coffield of Nansemond County, VA. William and Mary Pamelia are both names which appear in Thomas' descendants in the 1800s. This William did have a son named Gresham, also others named Willis and Thomas. How this William connects to the Benjamin and Gresham Coffields of Edgecombe County, NC is uncertain. Undoubtedly they were all descended from the Gresham Coffield who arrived in VA in 1638.
