The spelling of the name was probably changed in this country by clerks of court who spelled the way the name sounded. As for SA, many went there after the Civil War.
My line goes back to Switzerland, then Germany before coming to this country to PA. Later to VA, TN, and AL.
Kaufman (and other spellings) is German for merchant. There are more than likely many families with this surname so pointing you to my lineage won't help.
As for religion, if your family was at one time Jewish would you be able to search synagogue records?Often religious records are the best there are!
You need to begin your search in KY.Genealogy starts with the known and moves back one generation at a time. You have your own information, the name of your father, grandfather and g grandfather as well as the wives' surnames. You have alot more than many start with!
