Coffman/Kauffman Family in Northeastern TN
I've been trying for months to track down information on my father's side of my family and I'm running into numerous dead ends.I'm truly hoping someone may read this and think, "Oh, I remember them," so here goes.
my father was Harry D. Kauffman (Coffman). He was born & raised in a Northeastern county in Tennessee (Campbell maybe).I remember the city names of Jellico, LaFollette, & Morley. His father was born General H. (for Harrison, I believe) Coffman, but changed the spelling to Kauffman, b.Dec 1888.General was his first name, not a military rank.I have been able to locate 2 marriage certificates for him: one listing his wife as Della Montgomery (1908 - spelling his name General Coffman) and one dated Sept. 2, 1914 with his name spelled General H. Kauffman with Lula Murray (Harry's mother) listed as the bride.
General H's father was, as far as I've been able to tell, General I. Coffman, b.1858.The only information for General H's mother I can locate, names her as "Sallie Coffman," no idea what her maiden name was.General H's siblings were listed as Laura, Sam, & Tacy and I remember a great uncle named Michael, who may have been the youngest.
I cannot find a marriage certificate for General I. Coffman and Sallie Coffman.Only she and the children (except for Michael) are listed on the 1900 Campbell County Census - Sallie as the Head of the house & single. In the 1910 Henderson County, TN Census, General I. Coffman is listed as Head, with his wife listed as Dara A (approx. 25 yrs. his junior) & there is a daughter named "Bulah H. (age 11) listed as well.No further information can be found on General I Coffman or Sallie Coffman.
Harry's mother was Lula Murray, b.1895.Her mother's name is listed in the 1920 Campbell County, TN Census as Martha E. Marlow (b.1873, TN) & the mother of several Murray children (my grandmother's siblings) and her marital status is listed as "widowed."However, she is listed in the 1930 Claiborne, TN census as Martha E. Murray and residing with her daughter, Ethel (Murray) Snodderly and son-in-law.I'm completely confused as to if she was born a Marlow & when/if she legally became a Murray.
My father's side of the family is totally eluding me; I've been able to trace documents for my mother's side of the family with very little problem; these Coffmans/Kauffmans & Murrays are a whole different ballgame!
Thank you in advance for your time.I'd love to hear from anyone who has any idea about the missing relatives.
Sincerely,
Karen (Kauffman) Azzopardi
