There is a tid bit about a Nicholas Coffin in the Coffin Family book that makes the comments that very little is found of a Nicholas in the Portledge estate papers, deeds etc. Here is what they have found ~
The Earliest record of any Coffin at Portledge is Richard Coffin of 1254 from a deed. There is some sort of charter to Richard by Henry III that is in Latin which grants lands to him and his heirs at Alwington in the Co. of Devon. Another deed mentions Richard COPHIN granting unto Thomas de Dudderigge some lands also dated in this same era of Henry III.
The next thing is a mention of Nicholas COFFIN as vicar at the Church at CHUDLEIGH (see my previous post as that surname was in the lineage chart), in the southeastern part of Devon but they note it is about 40 miles from Portledge, but the date is around 1337. This parish church was dedicated to one Bishop BRONESCOMB on Nov. 6, 1259. (this last name is Very similar in sound to BOSCAWEN, in my opinion).
A Nicholas COFFIN was instituted on the 20th of June 1337.

Also a Peter de MOYNE married a "Maude" daughter of Coffin of BEACOMBE in the 3rd year of the reign of Edward I, which they estimate Maude's birth at around c1140.
It also states that other surnames the Coffin family have intermarried with were CHUDLEIGH, CAREY, COURTNEY, BEAUMONT, PRIDEAUX, CLIFFORD and a few families of Royal ancestry going back to Wm. the Conqueror, Henry I and Edward I.
A Sir William Coffin, Knight was a brother to Sir Richard Coffin who was the High Sherrif of Devon and the one of Alwington. This Sir William Coffin was Master of the Horse during the Coronation of Anne BOLEYN (one of King Henry VIII's many wives) in the year 1534. Sir William married Lady Manors of Darbyshire. Sir William owned the manor at East Higginton in Berrynarbor in northern Devon which was about 15 miles away from Portledge. Sir William was also high steward of the manor at Standon in Co. Hereford which is also where he died. In his will he left to King Henry VIII his best horses and his best hawks. He is buried under a flat stone at the church at Standon which states he was a Knight and of the Privy Chamber of King Henry VIII and Master of Horse unto Queen Anne etc. He died Dec. 8, 1538.

According to this opening info in the book there are/were apparently many Coffin/Coffyn lines and perhaps the best way in which to sort them all out would be via Ydna testing results. There are probably Numerous Coffin's out there who are related and many who are not. These results could be your best possible bet for a chance at sorting them out somehow.

The book does say that there is not one bit of evidence that the American Coffin's are descended from those of the Portledge Coffin's and notes that there are Coffin's from all over England who could be the root line.

Also, one last note, on the front of the ornately carved wooden Pulpit in the Church at Alwington is the basis of the COFFIN Coat of Arms, the shield with the circles and crosses.

AND I need to make a CORRECTION to my last post...the Lineage Chart may Not have come from details from the Portledge estate as I stated. This chart was given to me and by whom I cannot recall as I did not mark it. I have it stored with the photo's that someone who did visit the Estate years ago sent to me so I just automatically assumed it was info obtained from their trip, however as I thought back on it, I believe that to be Incorrect, this info may have been derived from nothing more than IGI records or someones attempt to make a Coffyn/Coffin lineage line out of what info they had available to them, so the Lineage Chart info I posted most likely is Not entirely correct.
My apologies for any confusion on that.
