Al Carhart, I somehow missed your post in 2001. Thanks for the reply. The Coffey's, who are popping up in my Elliott family documents, may be related in some way to my Hillin family, also connected to Jackson County, AL, as the given names are the same in some instances. Joseph Elliott's daughter, Mahala, married ABSOLEM Hillin in Jackson Co. AL, and his brother or cousin, NATHANiel Hillin lived there, also. Nathaniel's son was Theodore Bland RICE Hillin. David Elliott, son of Joseph, moved from Jackson Co., AL, to Titus County, Texas, where he was counted in the 1870 census. "Deposition from Brittian Coffy and James A. Russell: David Elliott removed from Titus Co., TX. to Cherokee Nation in 1871." This from: National Archives, Fort Worth, Texas, M1869, Roll 6, case 142, John W. Elliott et. al. vs. Cherokee Nation 1896-97. And, can anyone tell me about Coffeys Company., Cawlfields Batt'n, Ala. Mounted Vols.? This is from: M-629, National Archives, Index to Compiled Service Records of Volunteer Soldiers Who Served During Indian Wars and Disturbances, 1815-1858: Serving in the Florida War (Creeks and Seminoles): William (pvt.), Winford (pvt.), David (bugler) Elliott, and Jesse Hillin (Corpl.). Thanks, Betty Notify Administrator about this message?
